When Gemma Taylor arrives in Lancashire for a relaxing vacation at her best friend Jessie’s family’s summer home, she expresses her concern of staying the night by herself to her best friend. Jessie then begins to unravel a family saga involving the discovery of an old diary, a portrait of a man in uniform, and a restless spirit searching for justice and a woman he lost long ago. The story began in 1814 with the murder of the Earl of Hayworth, and ended with the conviction and execution of his brother, Alexander shortly thereafter.
After discovering an old war medal hidden in the garden, Gemma soon finds herself back in 1814, as the unexpected and suspicious guest of Lord Alexander Hayworth. Already aware of the handsome lord’s fate, Gemma tries to alert him of the future dangers he and his brother are facing. Alex has enemies, and he’s not opposed to thinking this beautiful and unusual woman is as innocent as she claims. But when she informs him that Roger will die and he will stand accused of his death, Alex realizes that despite all the dark demons he has held inside must be set free, and trusting Gemma is the only way his life or his heart will be saved.
